'The Rocky Horror Show'

#GIFTED Kicking off the spooky Halloween season in style, I was invited along to see the 2019 world tour of Richard O'Briens award winning musical 'The Rocky Horror Show' at Wolverhampton's Grand Theatre. 'The Rocky Horror Show' is a cult classic that fans enjoy time and time again. Seeing in for the first time will be one of the best experiences of your life. There is no other show like it.

As shocking as it is, some people have never seen the show or the movie adaptation 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show', and if you are one of those people then you'll be in for a treat! So, why is the show such a cult classic and why do fans love it so much? Simple. It was the first musical of its kind to involve fluid sexuality, sexual difference, LGBT themes in pop culture, it's the only movie to still have limited cinema viewings 4 decades after it's initial release and gave a point of difference between generations in the 1970's. But the list goes on! The audience play a huge part in this musical and some fans call it a pantomime for adults. The participation from the audience is nothing sheer of filthy, but the actors on sage break their fourth wall to immerse the audience into the show. Fans take this very seriously and often dress up in replica costumes of various characters of the show, bringing along an assortment of props and phrases that are used throughout.

If you have never seen the show or its movie counterpart, you will have definitely heard some of it's catchy, sexual and charismatic songs such as 'Time Warp', 'Sweet Transvestite', 'Science Fiction Double Feature' and 'Touch-A-Touch-A-Touch Me'. All of which you get to perform with the cast directly from your seat. Fear not, if you have never danced the 'Time Warp' your fellow audience members will help you out... but so will the cast... oh and they also have visual instructions so you know exactly what to do.

A Quick Summary

We follow the story of newly engaged teenagers Brad (Asshole) and Janet (Slut) whose car breaks down in the middle of nowhere. They seek refuge in a nearby castle where they ask to use the telephone to get their car fixed. Within the castle we meet a number of wacky and spooky characters including Frank-N-Furter, a transvestite and master of the castle, with his servants Riff Raff, Magenta, Columbia and the Phantoms. The teens then get invited into Frank's lab where he tells them he has created the perfect human, with the flash of his contraptions the perfect human is born. A muscle man in very tight briefs, boxing boots, with a tan and blonde hair to match that Frank names Rocky Horror. The characters then become involved in a chaotic spiral of events that lead to sexual deviancies, lust and confusion. We then learn that Frank-N-Furter, Riff Raff and Magenta are aliens from the planet Transylvania and are to return to their home planet, but not before more chaos and outrage occurs. Rocky, Brad and Janet are locked within the castle and must try to escape the grips of Frank-N-Furter, but do they want to? Do they escape? Or does the new world they have been introduced to entice them too much...

Tips for Seeing Rocky Horror

When going to see a live performance of this show, it is important that you are aware of what to expect. The audience WILL shout out phrases, the audience WILL have props and the audience WILL dance and sing along.

  • Dress up! As surprising as it seems, you'll stick out like a sore thumb if you go in normal clothes. It is tradition that you dress as characters, or similarly, as a way to honour the show. You will see a lot of men in fishnet stockings and heels!

  • Bring props! You will have to do your research on this, but the most common choice are newspapers, torches, cards and rubber gloves!

  • Phrases! There are a number of responses and phrases the audience can shout during the performance. The most popular and crowd favourite is when the Narrator introduces Brad, to which you reply 'Asshole!' and Janet, to which you reply 'Slut!'

The Rocky Horror show will always get a 5 star rating from me. It is unlike any show you will ever see and will make you laugh, cry, dance, sing and a little horny! The shows ability to connect with its audience is nothing less than jaw-dropping. I have so much admiration for this show, especially the cast in the 2019 world tour.

Stephen Webb's portrayal of the transexual transvestite from Transylvania, Frank-N-Furter, was simply incredible. He had the audience in the palm of his hand and had us singing into submission! Our Brad (James Darch) and Janet (Joanne Clifton) were the perfect virgin teenagers that we all hoped for... well at least until the end of Act 1. Their vocals were phenomenal and Damn it! Brad and Janet, I love you! The energy from Riff Raff, Magenta and Columbia (Kristian Lavercombe, Laura Harrison and Miracle Chance) kept us all on our toes and had me crying with laughter throughout the entire show. And Rocky (Callum Evans) had the body of a god, the voice of an angel and the personality of a star! Evans embodied everything that Rocky Horror should be and I can vouch that the entire audience instantly fell in love... or lust... or both!

Wolverhampton's Grand Theatre is housing 'The Rocky Horror Show' until Saturday October 19th. So grab yourself a ticket and be swept away into this sexually, seductive, spooky, sensation of a show!
